Vinyasa Yoga
1. Vinyasa is a Sanskrit word that means ‘flow’. Each posture, in the practice of Vinyasa yoga, flows into the next. Complete relaxation comes at the end of the yoga practice.
2. Your focus during practice is on your breath and the way your body feels as you hold a pose.
3. When practicing yoga, stay within your comfort zone. Do not force or strain your body into a pose.
4. Move gently and gracefully into and out of each yoga posture.
5. The breath moves the body. You will be instructed when to inhale and exhale. It is difficult to follow at first. The most important thing to do is to keep the breath going.
6. Listen to your breath. The breath keeps your mind focused on yoga, and makes yoga a meditative practice. This focus is one of the things that separate yoga from calisthenics.
7. There is a lot of wrist involvement in Vinyasa yoga. In any position where your hands are on the floor, keep your fingers spread and facing forward. Keep your forearms in line with your wrist. At first, your wrist may be sore after class. In time your wrist will become stronger. If you have wrist problems, speak to me before class and I will show you some alternatives poses.
8. You can make up your own flow series by adding poses you like to the salutations.
